HexaVue / Medical technology

An interface built for the operating room

An operating-room interface has to connect complex equipment with clear, dependable controls. Working through Novanta, Black Point delivered the full UI scope for the HexaVue programme.

  • Complete embedded UI
  • Live gRPC API definitions
  • Collaborative driver-to-UI optimisation

The challenge

The system combined embedded interfaces, live video and stringent camera-to-monitor latency requirements. It also needed to support different languages and cultures and work effectively on medical touchscreens.

Our role

Our work covered the UI audit, information architecture, selected interface redesigns, the full settings UX, gRPC API definitions and embedded UI implementation. We collaborated on API reliability and optimisation from custom C++ drivers through to UI delivery.

Start with the existing workflow

We audited the previous interface and developed a new information architecture. The redesign included the full settings experience, giving a complex system an interface structure suitable for its users and operating context.

Work across the software and hardware boundary

The video path depended on FPGA hardware with custom VHDL switching and routing logic. We participated in driver-to-UI optimisation to meet stringent latency requirements. Our contribution connected embedded interface delivery with the wider hardware and driver engineering effort.

Build for worldwide use

We implemented the embedded UI across languages and cultural contexts and optimised interaction for medical touchscreens. Reliability requirements shaped both the interface work and our collaboration on the live API.

Develop against a simulated device

For each Novanta GUI, we build a mock server that simulates the real device. This lets the full interface run across development platforms, enabling faster iteration without requiring the physical device for every development task.

What the work delivered

  • Completed embedded UI delivery through Novanta.
  • A new information architecture and complete settings UX.
  • Live gRPC API definitions and collaborative reliability work.
  • Multilingual, culturally adapted touchscreen interfaces.
  • Device simulation supporting cross-platform GUI development.
